If it were an 09 cdi diesel that mileage is quite common in Europe but alas it is not. The 09 diesel has a very similar engine to my Canadian 05 cdi and it was Transport Canada rated at 61 mpg (Imperial) city and 71 mpg (Imperial) hwy. Just another uninformed car saleman I guess.

Obviously one who doesn't know the difference between an Imperial gallon and a US gallon; both obsolete units, by the way but, for what it's worth, the Imperial Gallon contains five quarts and the US Gallon has only four quarts. Everyone knows that diesel engines are much more fuel efficient and last much longer than gasoline engines. Sadly, however, GM destroyed the US automotive diesel market back in the 1970s, when they tried to make diesels out of gasoline engine blocks, in face of fuel shortages, and also mismatched them with transmissions; a recipe for self destruction!
Anyway; combine a diesel running Imperial Gallons and you can get some fantastic misleading numbers.
Berdo, I didn't "get it" either. As a fairly new member I've been seeing the jokes about Amsoil. Did a search and as usual it pulled up 3 pages, hundreds and hundreds of items, little of which referred to Amsoil. Finally came across one item that said one member had been banned for making himself a nuisance about Amsoil and stopped searching, figuring I'd spent enough time looking. I'm convinced its a top level oil and use it in my motorcycles and cars too, as well as Mobil1, whichever I can get the best price on. Lately, M1 is winning out because its frequently on sale, and available everywhere.
RVGRINGO, why convert anything to quarts when hypermilers measure real fuel economy in litres per 100 kilometers ? There are 4.5 litres in an Imperial gallon and 3.8 litres in a US gallon. Ergo, my 2005 smart cdi is getting slightly under 5 litres per 100 kilometers on average with my best around 4litres/100km. The diesel smart still has the best fuel economy by far measured any way you like it and can also run on biodiesel. I'm currently running B5 in mine. My prediction is if smart is to survive in the North American market it will have to import the European cdi sooner than later because the competition to smart is about to arrive on these shores with a diesel engine option. VW, Audi, BMW and Mercedes are already getting phenomenal mileage out of their clean diesels and blue tech diesels. I concur with your comment about Government Motors (GM) screwing the pooch with their diesel. With all their hopes riding on the Volt, GM had better score a win.
