Have been driving my diesel since 05 and don't have asthma yet. I would venture a guess that a diesel pickup gives of more emissions at start up than my Smart gives off on a short trip to the store and back. All California politics in my opinion.

Also, this thing is geared to get off the line with quite a bit of authority. Until about 30 MPH, it is quite a bit more quick than someone would expect - definitely enough to launch you past someone at a light or to squirt into a void in traffic. Watch some of the acceleration videos on youtube of the 451... you might be surprised.
I agree. Aveo, havent you noticed that most SUV's and other light compacts have 0-60 in around 12 seconds

I used to drive school buses and I'll tell you that it made me sick to my stomach being around all those buses with the fumes and filling up and what not. But I saw the emissions and most of them are solid . They eventually sink. The newer buses has a filter that with a flip of a switch you could clean out. It would push soot onto the ground and it looked like charcoal. Isnt that better than emissions that hang in the air? Heres an idea, a hybrid bio-diesel smart that gets the fuel from old vegetable oil.

450 cdi highway drive

Drove from Ontario to Florida on I75. A smooth, effortless trip, keeping up with traffic and no instabilities.

I'm designing a car very similar to the 4two. Its about the same size and weight (curb wt. 1944 lbs) but its powered by a 1.2 liter turbo Diesel (that runs on ULSD aka D15). The engine makes 64 HP @ 3200 rpm and 119 lb ft @ 3000. Its also very quiet.
Yep, that sounds very close to what my modded and tweaked [no engine internals modified] 2005 fortwo 0.8L turboCDI does now. Although I have a performance exhaust so it's not that quiet, the engine purrs...

I burn B40 biodiesel, which in our neck of the woods (British Columbia) is currently eight to ten cents cheaper - per liter! - than mid-grade gasoline. Plus biodiesel significantly reduces GHGs and particulates.

I get 58 US mpg in town and 70 US mpg on the highway. I've never timed 0-60 etc because I don't care about those numbers (why are Americans so obsessed with that?), but I can take all comers in regular town or highway traffic.

Come get your 2005 - 2006 smart cdi ...

For those US residents who wish to own a 2005 - 2006 smart cdi with the 6 speed transmission all you have to do is apply for an EPA exemption and once approved import one from north of the border. I will be importing my 2005 smart cdi this July but under a 3 year temporary exemption. It can be done and I'm quite surprised at how many have applied and been approved for an importation of the smart cdi (intercooled and turbo charged). Transport Canada mpg figures are 61 mpg city, 71 mpg hwy and that is to the Imperial gallon (4.54 litres). The best mpg I have experienced over one tank of diesel is 88.6mpg (Imperial gallon). I didn't buy it for the performance; I traded a 1985 Corvette for it and am only reminded of that when when I push on the throttle. No regrets otherwise.

2005smartcdi ...
