Knowing that direct injection and great mileage go together... Why wasn't the smart engine designed with this in mind. We may never get the diesel here in the USA but they could make the gasoline one more efficient. Also by using direct injection couldn't they use regular octane gas???
at this point, direct injection is still a fairly expensive setup due to the additional high pressure pumps, injectors, etc. - it would definitely add to the cost of the smart.
Scargo...where you inject the fuel to be mixed with the air charge has no bearing on what octane is needed for the motor... static and dynamic compression ratios dictate that part of the physics...
This is a port injected 4 valve motor... and a very little one... with 4 valves and a center fire spark plug there is no room to ingress another hole in the combustion chamber... 3 plugs, and three injectors and variable intake valve timing as as good as it is gonna get... and a whole lot better then a carburator...
I know a guy who plans to morph in a Weedeater 2stroke leaf blower as the turbo and swear he gets 120HP out of this dinky power plant.... look for the kit on E-bay any day now........ sly grin
no not me... but you just watch...it will be in same section Turbonators are sold
