Disable A/C in defrost?

Has anyone done this?
I know all new cars have this "feature" but when I eventually find my CDI I would like to disable this feature.
I was able to do this on my 08' Fit with little trouble by disconnecting one connection. Now my A/C comes on when I push the button. And if the Smart is anything like other cars the A/C light doesn't even come on when its running in defrost.
Since I live in Canada, I don't need the AC coming on every time I want defrost. Like when I drive home from work at midnight when its -5 or so.
Plus it will give me better economy.

The AC light does not come on when in defrost, but the AC is taking the humidity out of the air. What new car has the option of turning off the AC in defrost?
If you live in a humid area, the AC in defrost is a real advantage. I have a 56 Ford w/o AC, the defrost mode takes a lot longer to clear the windshield even on max blow, plus you have to wait until the engine warms up and the thermostat allow warm water to go to the heater, fifty year of technology..

Some new cars have the ability to disable this feature through electronics. The Honda Pilot and Civic for example. The dealer does this to most new cars sold here as there is very little humidity, just cold air!
Even if the light isn't on, the compressor is still being driven and sucking needless power.
I want the choice of turning it on when I need it.

You do know the compressor does not come on below like 4 degrees celsius, right?

The pressure switch takes that into account but what if its 5C?
Do I want my AC running? Nope.

I still don't understand why you would run in defrost, why not just heat directed to the upper air vents. If the windows aren't fogged what's the point, unless you are using that mode to melt ice from the windshield!!

By "defrost" this owner is referring to "turning the upper vents on" which - it turns out - appears to run the A/C. I want the option to turn A/C on myself if the windshield doesn't clear quickly. Heated outside air in cool weather is superb at clearing a windshield; under some conditions, I'll turn the A/C on in my car that doesn't think for me. Personally, I just like to move the stale air out of the window area - it helps make a warm car feel cooler without A/C (unless the A/C is on anyway even though I want it off).
