I went to a store and stopped the engine. Did my business, hopped back in, drove to a stop light, and looked down at my odometer. Lo and behold, the main odometer read "- - - -". One minute I had 3460 miles under my belt, and the next minute I was technically driving a brand new car! Needless to say, I was a bit perturbed. There seemed to be no ill effect on my transmission (my first suspect), but for a short distance I was traveling with no accountability (at least as far as DMV odometer readings are concerned). I was pushing the trip odometer button with no effect, and holding it down didn't reset the trip odometer or show the next scheduled maintenance. Was I supposed to call smartusa for this? Would the dreaded stuck tranny be next?
Luckily, the next intersection had a red light, and I decided to take drastic action. I turned off the engine and fired it up again. Shiver me timbers, my odometer was back! And it seemed to have kept track of the 1.5 miles I had driven since the store. I drove another 16 miles and have not had a repeat. Phew!
Well, this is certainly a quirky car. Not a boring mile in her. But that's the sort of surprise that I like to take in small doses. :kicknuts:
Check your battery. At idle it should read 13.5-14 volts, with a drop to 12 volts when the cooling fan kicks on. Engine off, it should read 12-12.5 volts.
Any time you momentarily lose computer data or lights dim, the battery is the first suspect. They should last 4-6 years, but if someone left a door open or light on for the boat trip over here... there went most of its lifespan.

Nice thought, but I know for certain that no one else has had access to my car and that my lights have never been left on (or the door left ajar). Hasn't recurred, so I'm hoping it was a fluke.
So...you came over ON THE BOATwith your smart? Now that's DEDICATION!
I'da come over on the boat with my smart if it meant getting it right away, rather than the weeks I waited while it sat in Jacksonville and they did the (non-recall) tranny adjustments. OTOH, the battery definitely would have been dead -- I would have been listening to CDs all the way across.
Hi everyone - This "-----" thing just happened to me last week... A restart of the engine cleared the issue. I'm not sure if anyone has come across a reason or explanation other than the (possible) battery... If so, I would appreciate the feedback. Thanks!
