here in new york we have the same problem, but we call them pedestrians.
dagwodzz: using the term "infestation" seems a little harsh.
anyway, I used to live many years in areas more rural than these, and it is largely the same situation:
A. attitute: it's their habitat, it's where they live (too), get over it, and don't think it's your right to eliminate them. I know we're taking avoidance here and that's the best approach, but as "things" happen, dealing with that eventuality is important too.
B. education: bone up on the work being done wrt pedestrian-friendly safety tech on new vehicles. city cars, especially, will likely be on the forefront of pedestrian safety issues. this is not a case where you necessarily want the biggest baddest most ridiculous vehicle money can buy.
C. action: drive with caution and respect, and assume the risk when driving in areas where there may be other life forms sharing the road, be it a deer, a child in the driveway behind you, or a elderly person trying to cross the bloody street when the light changes too fast.
and yes I know there's a difference between a 1500 lb four legged critter and a 100 - 300 lb. human, but the area of discussion is largely the same.
