I quit watching the ScanGuage so closely, placed it in the glovebox in case I need it, and started looking around outside the car.
I quit worrying about the “minute-by-minute” fuel economy, knowing that no matter what, it is better than I was getting with my old car.
I quit wondering why it does not get better mileage than my old 1991 GEO Metro. It is cleaner, faster, safer, quieter and MUCH more comfortable.
I quit reading posts about when to change the oil and will do whatever I have did in the past. At minimum, I follow the factory recommendations. It will all work out.
I quit worrying about the cost of an oil filter. I just spent $15,600.00 for the car. Why should I worry about a couple of oil filters per year?
I quit worrying about whether the shifter will stick. Some do, MOST don’t. Odds are in my favor that I will not have problems. All cars have quirks.
I quit worrying about the unfamiliar whirring and clicking noises the car makes. They will soon become familiar. Again, all cars have quirks.
I quit wondering why the seat does not recline any farther. I would not have noticed it if I had not read the post about it. I am not sleeping in the car.
I quit worrying about brake dust on the wheels. I have never had a disc brake car that did not get dust on the wheels. I wash it off, if I am not busy enjoying driving the car.
I quit worrying about its heating/AC system. I have never sold a car because the A/C was not cold enough or the heater was not hot enough.
I quit worrying about if it should be spelled “smart” or “Smart”
I quit adding to the list and started enjoying the car MUCH more

As I watched the "Ugliness in the forum?" thread turn to a witch hunt (it took three posts, and then continued on for eight (8) pages) and then reviewed my latest PM:

It occurred to me that THIS thread, that had possibly the most Smart-centric post on it (thanks, oldbike!) had managed to drop completely from the first three pages of posts. it had been replaced by posts about how the Smart engineers were stupid, how T Boone Picken's Plan would save us all, how we should pass laws to outlaw the rights and freedoms of others, and ... well, bunches of threads that really had nothing at all to do with the Smart but rather with trying to show up others over oil, electric cars, SUVs and other sanctimonious nonsense that quite a few of you know nothing about but are willing to post about.
I used to sign my posts with a snippet of a poem by Robert Frost:
"I shall be telling this with a sigh / Somewhere ages and ages hence / Two roads diverged in a wood, and I - / I took the one less traveled by, / And that has made all the difference." But that appears to be over the heads of quite a few, and some people just didn't get it.
And I think that may still be the case, given the current political knuckleheadedness that I continue to see here. At what point did y'all stray from being happy and thrilled with your shiny little cars and decide that you know more about oil, SUVs, Yarisii, etc? When did smartcarofamerica.com turn into lordoftheflies.com?
I can tell you where. I can tell you exactly where: It happened the second that someone here decided to start a non-Smart thread.
After I watched the Ugliness thread with amusement (I can honestly say that it's
you, not
me, after reading that thread

), I went to sleep last night. I'm owed $78K that I'll never see for work I've done, I'm a month behind on my rent, and things weren't looking too good for a business deal I have with a partner.
But I had done something before I drifted off: I had rented a Smart Cabrio for today to just take the day off and go cruise up to Big Bear and hang out at the lake.
I got up this morning, checked my email, noticed that the above PM had arrived, then went in and read the rest of my email. As I was doing that, the Smart showed up. I signed the paperwork, grabbed the keys and a hat and headed out the door. Top down, stereo 10 up good and loud.
Traffic was light, the roads were clear and the sky at the lake was crystal blue, cloudless, and right at 75 degrees. I got home and still have just under a quarter of a tank of gas (344 miles, so far!). It was a perfect day.
Oh, and one of my emails let me know that I am now worth $10M for a software idea I came up with. So, yeah, perfect day.
Rather than getting all bunged up over ... whatever non-Smartness y'all seem to always want to get bunged up over (funny how there's less posing and less dissention on the threads that are actually ABOUT the Smart ... coincidence?

), I recommend you go out and drive your cars and do what oldbike did:
"I quit worrying."
Besides, there's not enough room in the Smart to carry around torches and pitchforks for your silly-@ssed witchhunting.
Your pal,
Meat.
