Sure am glad I didn't wait. Car has worked flawlessly so far. Dealer checked over the linkage and that didn't take long at all. Keep in mind, most people that don't have problems aren't going to start a thread saying "I don't have any problems", so it often gives the impression of more people who are having problems than those that don't. For those that want to wait, that might be a good decision for them, but I love having a car that most people have never seen and gets so many positive reactions. My little orphan has a good home and is well appreciated. Beats waiting for my number to come up, although my wife has mentioned we may have to get another one by that time.
Being on the bleeding edge has it rewards and its risks. This manufacturer has been making the car ( or its predecessor) for what, 8 years or so, selling around 3/4 million cars. I am confident the car is well engineered and with M-B looking over the Frenchies shoulders, well made and reliable. If it gives me problems in first couple of years, I'll sell and not return. If I'm loving it and want more, I'll buy an aftermarket warranty if I am at all nervous at that point, or buy another one.
Meanwhile it's great to drive the only one I have ever seen on the road. How many times in a lifetime do we get to do that? At any price? Worth the risk.
If it makes you feel any better it is worth taking into account that all cars have issues, new model or not, and all car forums are chock a block with posts sharing that info and/or seeking solutions. Just checking Consumer Affairs will shows loads of recalls and that doesn't even reflect all the additional real world problems and other service bulletins people can encounter with every kind of car there is.
Try not to sweat it and enjoy the car, and if you have any problems that come up maybe check out a BMW forum or some other "lux' brand and be glad that at least you didn't pay as much as them only to encounter issues too ;)
Due to a delivery issue with our "assigned" out-of-state dealer we're waiting, probably until early April now. Seeing some of the teething problems posted I'm just as happy, not to mention maybe the temp will be above 20 by then.
I didn't fully expect that ALL of the cars would operate perfectly right out of the gate. If that is anyone's expectation, they should buy a honda or toyota. While still not a perfect 100% record, there is a lot better chance for flawless operation with either of these brands.
I'm someone that did have problems, live about 100 miles round trip from the dealer and still happy I didn't wait.
Buying a SMART car right now for its "reliability" isn't a "smart" choice. Buying a SMART car right now for its impact on the environment, statement about where the other manufactures should be headed and overall sense of being different ... is a "smart" choice.
Just went to a party tonight with about 20 people. Everyone was talking "peak oil" the fact that 50% of the electricity in our country comes from coal, that world population growth was out of control, and then everyone started asking me about my car (I had parked it out front). Where did I get it, what kind of miles does it get, how much did it cost, what's it like to drive, and everyone started to say things like "this car is a really great idea and we maybe we should get one". So there you go. Maybe we are starting something here? Maybe we can change the world a tiny bit while also having alot of fun? I really do love this car!
