Do not leave the key in the ignition!

Last night, after having parked the Smart in the garage and after switching off the engine, for no particular reason, I left the key in the ignition. This morning, I found the car completely locked. Good thing, the spare key was in the house. I would have thought that the auto locking feature works only when the transmission is engaged and the car is running. Not so.

Interesting. I'm going to have to review the manual. So far I've left the key in the car numerous times, including for a number of hours, and have not had this happen.

I’m looking into this as well. Is your vehicle equipped with the factory alarm option?

I have the factory alarm system and have had the car automatically set the alarm (as I found out the hard way) without the key in the ignition, but I don't remember it locking the doors.

I didn't realize people could still do that and have a car to come back to. Nice to hear, actually.

Somebody had posted earlier that it, virtually, was impossible to lock your key in the car..thus negating the need of keeping a spare key in my wallet. I WAS happy with that response. NOW, I'm not! BACK TO NEEDING A BACKUP KEY TO UNLOCK THE DOOR!

From the manual:

Auto-relock function
The vehicle will lock again automatically within
approximately 60 seconds of unlocking with
the key if neither the driver’s nor passenger
door is opened.

! To prevent an inadvertent lockout, never
leave your key lying in the vehicle.

Odd....My Toyota will NOT lock if there is a key in the vehicle (on the seat...in the ignition). You would think that MB could get that bit of technology right.
