It's a car, acts like any other car on the highway. Its a hand full on really windy days. Cruise control is a big NO NO in rush hour traffic, at 65 to 75 mph. I drive 38 miles round trip.
I drive 95 everyday 30 miles each way but would not use cruise, I would be turning the sucker off and on 10 times. I have to speed up and slow down way to much. I hate the windy days, you really have to drive this car on the overpasses and bridges since I live close to the water. I have 16,000 miles on my smart now.
I commute 120 miles a day to and out of Chicago. The smart is a great commuter car; in my opinion it would not be good in stop and go because of the transmission hunting for gears. I would love to have a cruise control for about the first 30 miles before I hit too much speed variance because of traffic.
I picked up my car July 5 and it has 12400 miles on it. Not a single problem so far.
I drive about 75 miles a day round trip from the 'middle of no where' to work in Charleston, WV. It's about half single/two-lane roads and then the other half on I-79.
My trip looks like this: 25 mph for ~2 miles, avg 50 mph for ~15 miles, then 60-65 mph on I-79 for ~21 miles. No traffic or traffic lights on the way in, just one stop sign. I use manual shifting pretty much 100% of the time and can shift it smooth as an automatic (and hold gears as necessary).
smart handles it fine. I don't have snow tires (that's what the truck is for ), but I've recently driven it in some light snow/icy conditions without any problems. There were a ton of accidents due to black ice, but the smart behaved well (at reasonable speeds for the conditions, of course).

I drive anywhere from 120 to 150 miles per day, five days a week. I've had my Fortwo for 2 weeks and I already have over 1500 miles. I don't have cruise control, but it would be nice. Heavy wind can be very challenging. All in all, my Fortwo is a great commuter car.
120-150 miles a day in RI? Do you reive back and forth 6 times a day. I dind't think those kind of miles were posible in RI
As for this household, I work from home and don't have a regular commute so My wife takes the car 60+miles a day commute through the country side. If I need to make a longer sales call trip on any day, I take the Smart. Whoever has the longer commute gets the Smart.
~70 miles per day for wife and i carpooling.
sometimes we take the highway, more often we take local routes to avoid the traffic.
we don/t have and don't use cruise control.
for our situation, cruise is not mandatory - we have two other vehicles equipped with it and have not used CC in all the years we have owned them.
we drive the smart with a mix of auto and manual. usually auto in the morning when i have a cup of coffee with me.
the car can handle the mileage just fine. we've managed about 10K miles since july 1st.
as to speed, the car is fine up to about 75 which is the optimistic top-end around here given population density and the respective traffic.
panorama roof is great - hardly every use the sunshade. the openness created by the roof makes the cabin feel that much more roomy, which is important since we're carpooling together and i'm 6'5".
the car is susceptible to high crosswinds. this is an infrequent occurrence around here however and we have other vehicles more suited for bad weather or storms.

I commute to Boston. If I had to stay within RI's borders, I would have to drive up and down I-95 3-4 times.
[quote=unicycle;174967]My commute, to return to the original Q (so sorry!) is about 170 miles a day; I drive an additional 10-30 miles a day with errands. As for the two long drives, I recommend an mp3 player and some of your fave podcasts (Car Talk, Fresh Air, Sex is Fun... they're all free, and there are lots more). When you get tired of those, switch to books on tape (on CD, really); I've listened to about two books a week for a few months now. It's especially fun to get into a series or an author.
If you're going through that many books and have an mp3 player let me suggest www.audible.com I commute around 100 miles a day and listening to a good book helps pass the time. With the larger audible memberships you cut the average cost of a book to about 12 bucks as compared to almost 50 if you buy it on CD. Plus you don't have to keep switching discs and books take up very little of your mp3 memory. Ok, sales pitch over (No I don't own stock in the company)

Thanks for the suggs. I'm way ahead of you, tho: I get the boox from my library (free!) and put them into the 6-CD changer I upgraded to last month.
