A salesman told me that it does adapt to your driving, but we all know how salesmen are....

The human element is what adapts and learns.

Perhaps the salesman bought into the myth, along with a bunch of other people? It would've been interesting if you had pressed him on the point. "I want to see that in print."

Is it my imagination, or have we had this discussion before?

My smart transmission as dumb as a brick and won't learn

I've had my say already. And voted NO to the poll.

The common conception is that the transmission learns your behavior and performs "best" for you - I think that's bunk, so I voted no. The "bobblehead" phase of driving is, however, something that abates over time. This is not the driver getting used to the transmission, but the shifting becoming smoother over time. I was getting a little motion sick with the original shifting. Things had improved long before I got new springs which helped further.

I know very few facts about the smart. I'm not certain the behavior I think I've observed with the transmission has changed because of my behavior or because of the amount of ionic charge in the air outside the car. Much of the car is a mystery to me, transmission included.

Could there possibly be a difference in shifting due to changes in the power and torque produced by the engine? At 4000 mi. I have observed my smart extending the run in 1st to 4k rpm as is second, but that could be that I'm using more throttle and adapting to the way the car operates. What ever it is, I like the change!!

I can't say for sure whether my transmission is adaptive & learns or not, but I sure wish that I could change out the "teenager learning to drive a manual" chip when I'm in stop-and-go traffic, for the experienced "can drive anything on 4-wheels" chip! Just "bunny-hopped" all the way home due to road construction on I-5 near DuPont, WA!

Dave,

Unfortunately BECAUSE OF THE MISERABLE FORUM SEARCH FUNCTION repeat subjects do occurr all too often. But then again maybe that is O.K. as our smart community grows every day with NEW owners and the NEWLY curious.

Finding a previous subject is made even more difficult as the forum folders cannot be sorted high/low by views or subject.

I dare say that if you looked at the participants in this NEW discussion many are different from the previous iteration in which you participated.

IMHO as this discussion does include a vote tally without requiring a posting, it is different.

Thankfully the forum moderators do not (always) play big brother by linking up old with new nor do they threadcrap.

Have a smart day!

Tom
