Don't hate me...

...its another MPG thread

thinking about reserving a convertible...I have read a lot of places where people complain about the convertible MPG, does anyone have good luck with their smart and average the same as hard top counterparts? I am between the passion and the convertible...would be nice to have a convertible with the FL heat...top down 11 months of the year would be awesome!

There are a few of us on the Fuelly site. I know Max, our 08 cab, is listed with his 20 fill ups so far. Here is a great place to compare mpg and the reasons some are lower than others. Check it out if you haven't already. Add your smart and any others you might have. It's great to have the data.

Other than a bit of extra weight and a slight aerodynamic penalty when the top is down there is unlikely to be much difference. We have two cabrios and they both get around 28 to almost 30 mpg, but I doubt a coupe would be any better. The variation caused by different drivers will be greater than that caused by the type of roof.

FYI - my smart which has got 5000 miles on it is averaging 46mpg (thats zero highway driving so no speed above 60) which is much better than 28-30;

With highway I have not gotten below 40mpg for the most part (below 70mph)

From the beginning I have been logging all mileage and fill-ups and continued to get the same mpg throughout.

That makes mine getting 16mpg more than yours..... thats just odd

Cheers

imcquade, you arent driving a convertible though are you? It doesnt look like it from the picture. I know hardtops are getting high mileage, but I have heard bad things about the convertible from drag...just wondering if these claims are true. I get 38MPG average in a car which is not nearly made to get quite so high...I understand a lot of it has to do with the driver...I am just wondering if there are high mileage success stories written by cabrio drivers

Krodista,
I have a convertible smart Passion and absolutely love it! My wife and I live 40 miles north of Seattle, Washington, in a town called "Marysville".
I took delivery back on the 8th of March and now have about 10,000 mile on it.
We have an English Bulldog and travel about 2x's a month down to Portland, Oregon to see my in-laws. That's about a 3 and 1/2 to 4 hour drive (depending on traffic), at a driving distance of 215 miles. With the car fully loaded with myself, my wife, English Bulldog, & luggage, plus the A/C on during this past summer, we got between 41 & 43 mpg!
You will love the smart cabrio! There's nothing like driving with the top down during nice weather. During the hot humid weather, having the top up with the A/C on is wonderful. The quality of the top is A+ and for a convertible, it's rather quiet. The back window is glass with a heating element to keep it clear from fogging up. The only drawback when the top is down is the rear visibility is reduced (we got a rear back-up camera), and not having a rear-wiper. These are not major setbacks and I would still prefer to have a cabrio.
When the car was below 3,000 miles, I did notice we were only getting mid-to-upper 30’s in the MPG department. However, as soon as we were over 7,000 miles, our mileage increased into the 40’s.
I hope this helps answer your question.
Regards,

-Tom L.

I have the cab, and after 3,000 miles I'm consistently getting mid-40's. I have no stop-and-go traffic at all, but it is mountainous here. I can't imagine I would do any better with a coupe and I love my car!
