The amount of time that the clutch plates are slipping and wearing during a downshift (or upshift) is negligible, unless the clutch is already completely shot. Most clutch plate wear occurs when getting under way from a stop.

I downshift a) when going up hill and I need more power, b) when approaching a yellow light I need to run, LOL, and c) when the weather's bad and I'm coming to a stop.

As long as you downshift within the RPM parameters (e.g. when in low 5 you downshift to 4, and you aren't downshifting when high in a gear causing the now-lower gear to sing a high note) and don't downshift from 2 to 1, I can't see where you're doing any harm.

I don't know how the '08s work but, in my '09 if I'm in manual and I'm approaching a stop and depressing the brake (for arguments sake let's say I was in 5th gear), the gear indicator flashes to 3, then 2, then 1 just before I stop, but I don't actually hear it downshifting, so I think that's more an indication of, "This is the gear I will be in if you get off the brake and step back on the gas," LOL.
