The mileage you get with a brand new car is a bit less than what it can do after it gets broken in. You can get all sorts of data that has limited use the best in my view is over time in average use.

The weather my moods all change with time

I have no problem with an average of 39 MPG

I've gotten 50 once, and came close (44 to 48ish) several other times. Most if it wasn't mixed at all though. It was mainly highway travel, going 60 to 65 at most for over a hundred miles. I'd especially doubt 50 at this time of year if you're in a northern state with winter gas mix.

A scan gauge is great for getting a relative mpg based on actions. Is it better to go 50, 55, 60, etc. It's also great for seeing real-time conditions and giving an estimate of your current mpg and other stats. But for real mpg numbers you need to track fill-ups and mileage. There are plenty of free sites out there to do the tracking.

I keep a spreadsheet and have a script that pushes the latest updates to a few sites. You can check their tags out below.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. Looks like you should have that gauge examined by the dealer when u take it in again. No emergency, but clearly the thing could benefit from a little tweaking if you're going from 110 at 3/4 to 138 at 5/8.

As I've noted, 5/8 is where my gauge starts to get pretty reliable. At that rate, you might get about 370 miles on the tank, which is pretty good.

Anyone know for SURE how accurate the gage is when it gets below ONE GALLON? When it starts counting down in TENTHS the amount of fuel left, I would think that would be fairly accurate.

On my first tank, I ran it down (not on purpose mind you) below a gallon and the odometer stopped reading and it started reading in tenths the amount of gas left.......NICE!

Do Pandas Like Worms
Because if you want to go there you will be opening a realy big can of Worms.
Or maybe Pandas are into resurections, Because you seem to want to resurect that Dead Horse again

But seriously, Im not allowed to test the final gallon because my wife wont let it stay in that range.

I've had it well below 1.0 a few times, including a few miles at 0.0, which was pretty terrifying, tho I recently read of someone driving 10-20 miles at that point. Prolly not a good idea. I like trying for 380+ mile tanks, so I may start toting around a 1-gal can of gas just to be safe in case I need the extra 45 miles before hitting a station.

I'd refill before 0.0, tho... Not good for the car of you actually run out of gas.

Sorry, didn't know there was a previous discussion on this subject. I DO think that sometime this summer, I'll put a 1/2 gallon of gas in my gas can and intentionally run my smart out of gas, put the 1/2 gallon in and see what the gauge reads. Yes, it's not going to be precise, but 'close enough for government work'.

Depending on how you drive, and the terrain, you should be able to get 20 miles or so below 0.0. I've done it a few times.

I like to think I live dangerously from time to time, but there's NO WAY I'm running BELOW the 0.0 gallons. I don't know where YOU live, but we DO have areas here in Indy that the last thing I want to do in is RUN OUT OF GAS!
