Electric Smart Car

It may not be a "smart car" but it is smart in terms of getting off the black gold...

http://blog.wired.com/cars/2008/03/subaru-r1e-to-b.html

I'd get one today if I could.

1163 and no confirmation yet but I MIGHT get my car before 2010. If not, I am FOR SURE getting one of these.

It's only two years and it might be well worth the wait depending on price and charging times. I don't really want to save gas. I want to save money. But, if it screws OPEC (back) a little, all-the-better.

Trade mine in a heartbeat for a PHEV version. I think the ones they're testing (A company named Zytek) are diesel hybrids, though. I don't want a diesel...fuel is too expensive vs mileage savings.

Hybrids are the product of conflicted minds.

Smart will start selling cheap "reservations" for the eV next month but smart people will just wait and pop into a dealer for an orphan sometime next year.

Being a Subaru owner I'm sure these guys will have it sorted out. But the 50 mile range? Never gonna work (IMHO) in the big cities with lots of freeway time; most drivers in LA, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, etc. easily put over 50 miles a day on their cars. Limited range is the bane of these plug-in electrics.

Yes, I would love to go all electric, but my commute is 30 miles one way. Or 60 miles per day.

If the return route is downhill you should be OK.
