Bah, once it is warmed up, use the entire rev range if needed.
People on a Saturn forum I frequent gripe about how slow the 2.2 liter VUE is... then they talk about shifting at 2200 RPMs. The thing will pull easily from 1500 RPM, but from 3800 to redline, it will shove you into the seat and put a lot of comparable cars in the weeds.
In nearly 100K, it has never used oil between changes, gets ~27 MPG mixed, and is smooth and damn near inaudible around town still. I broke it in following the manufacturer's instructions, and it has been perfect since - and it probably sees redline once every other day.
I fully intend to do the same with the smart... keep the oil changed, and let it stretch its legs once it is warmed up. With the sounds it makes, it is going to be hard not to do so.
