Engine light on, lost power, sputtering (4th time 164 miles)

My smart is in the shop. It stayed overnight, since they can't figure out what it is- though not for trying. I resisted posting, just to wait it out, but maybe someone out there has some helpful ideas.

What happens: driving normally, mostly using auto-mode, when the engine light comes on, then rapidly, the car starts running VERY roughly, as if on one cylinder, and sounding like a 30 year old (badly running) Vespa. Then the light sometimes starts to flash.. then usually, I pull over turn off, restart a minute later and it's fine.. till it happens a day or so later.

1- It's *not* the loose gas cap issue. They also don't think it's valve related. It's still on its first tank and has gone 164 miles, all driven softly in break-in fashion.
2- This actually happened on the day-of-purchase test drive, before I took it home. The dealer was super cool, but horrified -kept it for the afternoon and eventually found one loose wire that wasn't tightened down.
3- Took it in yesterday just as a precaution (the light wasn't on, but figured they could read the code) and after the tech dropped me off and headed back to the shop, it did it for him (does that EVER happen that the mechanic actually gets to 'enjoy' the symptoms?)
4- They had it all day, they think it's the injector, but they switched it, and it's still doing it. They're also checking all the wiring. I'm posting to see if there are any other ideas out there..

Just be thankful you live close enough to the dealer; imagine if you were 300 miles away.

Something is wrong. Computers are running everything. You did the right thing to take it to the shop. They will plug your cars computer into their computer and the two can chat.

Had similar problems with my MCS once. Turned out to be bad fuel-had water in it! Fuel came from a branded Shell station.

Drained the fuel, replaced the fuel filter and it was fine.

Worth checking out!

Hey, easy on the Vespa comparisons. I have a 64 Allstate (Vespa made scooter for Sears) and I wish all my vehicles were as dependable as that. That said, please keep us updated. Very unusual problem. I admire your patience.

I wonder what the exact build date of this car was... maybe there was some French labor protest at that time... actually it sounds like something in the computer could be wonky. Or bad gas(oline).

Fuel Starvation?

I had a similar thing happen to me when I used the “Vapor Recovery” hoses at the gas station. It either ran full-on or off. No in-between. When it overfilled the tank, the purge must have forced it into the charcoal canister and soaked it pretty good. This prevents the air to return to the tank as the fuel level drops and made my engine run rough. Maybe the air line out of your canister is plugged-up or kinked?
If anyone else overfills their gas tank, you can drive it, but depending on how wet the canister is, the engine could be missing for awhile until you get home (or destination). Let it sit overnight so the gas will evaporate in the canister and it should run ok the next day.

As we type, there is a thread over on the MINI forum about bad gas. Some SoCal folks who were in town for AMVIV V filled up at a station near the host hotel before departing. According to the thread starter, several MINIs had problems on the way home, including two blown engines! The main suspect is water in the gas. Coincidently, the tanker truck was filling the station's tanks at the same time and the theory is that the process stirred or kicked up some water or other debris which ended up in the MINI tanks and caused all of the problems.

Your issue does sound more computer related, tho, IMHO.
