Extended "Warranty" for the Smart and tires, more details available now
I reported on Monday that Smart is offering an extended "warranty" as follows:
Months / Miles
48/48,000 $695
60/60,000 $995
60/75,000 $1195
60/100,000 $1595
This extended warranty does extend the 24 months warranty, so if you select 48 months, you buy an additional 24 months.
And Smart also offers tire & rim protection:
Repair or replace wheels and tires damaged by road hazard $345
I do now have complete copies of both contracts. Note that I put the word warranty in "" because it clearly states "service contract" on the documents.
While it has Smart printed on the cover page, it is clearly a 3rd party product. Why else would they reference trucks and snow plowing in the fine print?
In any event, if somebody cares to review these contracts and give us a .05 cents assessment, I will gladly email the PDF upon request. Send me a private message through this board.
I am still on the fence, as regards buying these coverages. We have had extended warranty on a Ford pickup truck. The one time we needed it, our claim was turned down. I have not had a tire failure or flat in many years. But I banged-up the rims by turning corners too closely. THAT is specifically excluded.
Anyway, food for thought and I would appreciate additional comments.

"Our retail and insurance packages offered by smart center dealers will allow smart fortwo owners to take advantage of one-stop shopping to quickly get rolling in this amazing vehicle."
The highlights of this personal auto insurance plan for smart fortwo drivers is called: "Insurance foryou" and features:

"smart USA is excited to partner with two fantastic companies who pride themselves on outstanding customer service. Both Daimler Financial Services and Liberty Mutual have a long history of success in the United States," said David Schembri, President, smart USA.
This consumer car insurance program is innovative in the captive financing market as all customer touch points are being used to promote the program including Finance & Insurance Manager referral, website enrollment, finance billing inserts, and cross-selling by Liberty Mutual field agents and call center agents.
"Our research has shown that well-known major insurers may not have been fully prepared to quote on a brand new vehicle that is creating a brand new segment in the U.S. market," said Anamika Singhal, General Manager, Daimler Insurance Americas. "With Liberty Mutual as a partner on Insurance foryou, the program enables smart fortwo owners to obtain a highly competitive quote along with a special discount which helps get vehicles on the road, especially for those thousands of customers who made advanced reservations on the purchase of the smart fortwo months ago."

If you read carefully the contract, you will find that its not a true bumper to bumper warranty but a "Mechanical Repair Service Contract".
Its really a service contract with a lot of restrictions. Mainly to give another profit venue to the dealer. So don't even bother to get the one offered by the dealers.
I would recommend instead to look at http://www.warrantydirect.com
with their SecureCare coverage or https://www.nwarranty.com/nwarranty/indexpage.aspx (Smart not yet listed)
You will get more bang for your money.
Also do some reading here too http://www.carbuyingtips.com/warranty.htm very helpful info.
Hope this helps yah!

I checked warrantydirect dot com. They list Smart. The 48 months "secure care" coverage with 75K miles is from $1439 to $1789 depending on the deductible.
BTW, as for the Smart extended warranty, I was told the prices are set by Smart, not the dealer.

How many people are buying the extended warranty? Believe me I am not a expert at this but aren't you paying for a major repair before it happens? I don't know thats why I am asking. Plus I afraid of the micro print loop holes.

The meager 2/24 is designed to induce us into the exceptionally expensive Smart branded third party service contract that if reviewed closely requires more frequent services adding to cost of ownership
If peace of mind with a first year new design is your goal you will be well advised to shop around get other quotes and be prepared to negotiate hard with the dealer if you prefer the Smart branded product
As a point of interest the warranty direct 5/60 secure care was quoted to me at $993 about the same cost of the Smart product except side by side they cover significantly more...
I do not like any third part products...I only have ever used Fords ESP on expensive Ford trucks that I knew I was going to use at the edge of its rated max tow haul capability... so I bet $1600 against a probable $6000 tranny failure
As advertised, I say the list prices for the Smart product are ridiculously high

After reviewing the "actual" policy, seems like very weak coverage for the $$$$$$$ IMHO
