Extented Warranty or Not?

I say this as Consumer Reports has gone on record with:

"But if your heart is set on a car with a below-average reliability record, it's more of a toss-up. You can decide for yourself how much "peace of mind" is worth. For example, the highest usage claims were for Mercedes-Benz, for which we have no recommended models due to below-average reliability. But only 38 percent of those owners said they saved money with the extended warranty; the average loss was $100."

I for one will do an extended Warranty - BTW Header should also be Extended not Extented sorry to fast on the keyboard.

Third Party Scam.

We choose to pass on the (3rd party) service contract. This is not an extended warranty by Smart Or MB.

The warranty CR is referring to is a real extension of the existing manufacturers warranty.

This is NOT the third party scam our dealers are tiring sell to us.

I took delivery of my passion cabriolet last Saturday (03-29-08) and did not select the extended warranty. The dealer offered $1540.00 to extend it to 5 years/75K miles. It included wheels and tires, but I've been burned before by warranties that seem to always have clauses that gets them out of covering anything. I'm very skeptical of any extended warranty offers.

Clarify please

Not sure if I understand the nature of the extended coverage offered by individual dealers. If it is a third party coverage then I would have serious reservations. I did that once on a VW and felt cheated. Turns out the things that are classified as "normal wear and tear" are so broadly interpreted that in the end nothing was covered. In this case the boots of CV joints were not covered. I would be willing to look at such coverage if the limitations were clearly defined and listed (eg. tires, windshield wiper blades, etc.)
