Exterior black plastic discoloration

As far as I know, everything I've used (Zaino) on my car was labeled as being plastic safe. Maybe something in the high pressure wand at the self serve car wash? There was at least one time when I had "High Pressure Soap" selected, but got "High Pressure Wax" instead. They had it loaded wrong. But, shouldn't their wax be plastic safe??? So, I don't know if that's what did it or not.

The result is, several places on the exterior of my car show the whitish discoloration I associate with some car waxes. It isn't all over the car, just some spotty areas on black plastic. It doesn't seem to wash off.

Anyone have any ideas on the cause, cure and prevention of this?

Do you dry off you car? Could that be hard water spots?

Yes, I dry it. And, it isn't THAT spotty. Fist size globs, not droplets. I guess I could post a photo if that would help. I thought others might be familiar with the problem. Maybe not.

EDIT: I just took some photos. Will add them.

OK, photos aren't very good. It was getting dark when I took them and the focus is soft.

Looks like wax discoloration to me. I didn't think Zaino did that. But, as I said, there was at least once at the self serve where they'd loaded Wax in the Soap location. Then, I dried the car. Maybe that's where I got it?

It isn't everywhere, just where the photos show. Really ugly. I'm looking for a cure and tips on prevention in the future. Help!

This just in from the Brycemaster at sc Portland:

At auto parts store: scrubbie wax remover for black trim. Like a 'foam' sponge, but you don't wet it. It's made for this job. He didn't remember the name, but the parts guys should know right off.

Brycemaster says it works like a champ. Hope that helps, 'm going to try it, because I know exactly what you're talking about.

All better?

Believe it or not, try peanut butter (just not the chunky kind). Apply some to a toothbrush, then gently rub the areas with the wax build-up. After it's gone, which may take a few tries, apply some high quality plastic/vinyl protectant and you should be all set.

Padawan, no kidding? Well, if it gets bubblegum out of hair, why not?

Of course, around these parts, one might find a slew of squirrels licking one's smartie...ewww, squirrel spit...

I have the same problem. Peanut butter seems to take care of it, but it just reappears after a few washes. Same thing happens with Armor All.

I can't find the proper cleaner locally. AutoZone has no idea what we're talking about. I've tried denatured alcohol, various de-greasers, GoJo, acetone, Simple Green, Goof-Off, all to no avail!

Someone please post a brand name product please!

You might try Mother's "Back To Black". It works well at restoring white spots to a bright black shine and lasts through several washes. I use it on the exterior plastic on several cars (of different makes) with good results.

I also use this... www.pigspit.com
It's a bit pricey, but is superior to everything else I have tried.
