Fan noise?

I've noticed that when I turn on the car, I can hear a buzzing noise (or humm) from the engine in my smart car. After about 5 minutes or so the noise goes away. I'm guessing its a fan or something but don't know why a fan would turn on when its 20 something outside.

Anybody can enlighten me?

It's a Black & Decker hand held vacuum cleaner.

It's the emissions pump, which pumps air into the exhaust manifold to aid in cleaner burning of the richer fuel mixture when cold and helping the catalytic converter warm up.

It is normal, and your dealer should have told you about it upon delivery of the car.

I bought the car at 6:30pm on the first snow storm of this winter. It was 8pm by the time all the paper work was done and they almost kicked us out of the dealer. The run through of all the car functions was done in like 15 seconds. The sales guy (not naming names) sounded like one of those auctions guys that talks real fast. By the time I reached the next block I had forgotten all that he had told me
