Faulty alarm????

Ok, this is it.. I am about ready to blow this smart up!! this is my third time up tonight and I think the my neigbors are begining to hate me and my smart car... What do I do?? My only fix tonight was to leave it unlocked... A brand new car unlocked on its first night on maui?? This does not seem right.. Do I have a loose microwave sensor or could it be my rear tailgate needs adjusting? If anyone has a real answer to this I would love to hear it..

Going back to sleep for now.. Aloha, Tim

To lock your car while disabling the motion detection system, follow these instructions:
Quote:
Switching off towaway protection and
interior motion sensor
Deactivate the towaway protection and the
interior motion sensor when locking the vehi
cle and
• transporting the vehicle,
• board, e.g. a ferry or auto train,
• there are people or animals in the vehicle,
• the side windows remain open.
This prevents any false alarm.
The switch is located in the upper center
console.

1 Towaway protection/interior motion sen
sor switch
2 Indicator lamp
> Remove the key from the starter switch.
> Press switch 1 within 60 seconds.
Indicator lamp 2 comes on.
> Exit the vehicle.
> Lock the vehicle using the remote control.
[i] The towaway protection and the interior
motion sensor remain switched off until you
lock your vehicle again.
Owner's Manual pages 78-79
Hope that helps your neighbor and your sanity... at least for the time being!

As for a probable cause, it could be, as you said, a faulty connection, or, as it happened in the past, an upside down sensor. There are two sensors, one in the gearshift housing, and one under the car aimed at the ground. You may try to get in touch with your dealer to try to have it diagnosed over the phone.
Good luck.

When you disable the motion sensor, the rest of the alarm is still operational. So, don't worry that you're leaving your baby completely unprotected until you get the sensor fixed.

Good Luck, I know what you mean, my Cab woke me up everynight that it was 32 degrees or lower, by shutting off the inside motion switch, I could get a night's sleep. Smart is now in the parts swapping mode after 2 months of hassels. I have not got any cold weather to check it out since they swapped two part this past week and I am hoping that it will get cold enough to test it by this weekend. Also becasue it is a fully loaded Cab they replaced the battery with the bigger 61 Aph battery.

Yep, mine just came out with the same problem. Microwave motion sensor (the one in the shifter area) was faulty. It'd be fine all week, then suddenly go off for no reason. I have to go in this week to get it swapped out.

Well I am happy to report all is quite here on maui.. No more loud alarms going off.. Thanks again.. I guess I will check with Smart San Diego and find out about that sensor under the parking brake.. I wonder why I never see a picture of a smart dealer ship at night with a number of smarts going crazy with thier alarms.. I wonder if this has happened? It must have happened...Lets find out. It would only make sense since they take these smarts move them around, test drive them and make the alarms go crazy..Or is it only when you become an owner that the smart plays tricks on us??? I wonder.. At anyrate thanks again.. Much Mahalos!!

Shipping A Smart to Maui!

Timini,

What was your experience like shipping your smart to Maui? I am interested in having one shipped to Oahu. Based on your posting it sounds like you bought it in San Diego.

I am looking at purchasing one in the LA area and shipping it back on either Matson or Pasha shipping service.

Any advice or lessons learned for a novice?

P.S. I did locate a smart car certified mechanic on Oahu through consultants at AutoHawaii.com (Hawaii Cars).
