Here is what I got in the smart.
"First Alert" small dry chemical fire extinguisher (I believe I got it from Sears).
It is CLASS B (Class B fires involve flammable or combustible liquids such as gasoline, kerosene, grease and oil.)
and CLASS C (Class C fires involve electrical equipment, such as appliances, wiring, circuit breakers and outlets. The C classification means the extinguishing agent is non-conductive.)
Small enough to fit in the tailgate of the smart (most fire extinguishers is to thick and will not fit) Lid have mounting holes, so it can be mounted vertically.
You know, If I ever have that problem, I screwed. Smart will never fix it under the factory warranty after they see all the electrical mods and extra wires.
The tailgate storage compartment gets *very* hot -- especially in stop/go driving. A cooler location for a compressed gas cylinder would be under the driver or passenger seat. I keep a 2.5 lb Halon extinguisher under the driver's seat -- it's wrapped in insulating bubble-wrap and held in place with strips of velcro.
I was just thinking what if there is an engine fire. how do you get to the extinguisher? Put it under the seat or next to it, were you can grab at a moments notice.

I know exactly where you are coming from with that thought. All's I can hope for is they don't mind the three fuses in the SAM. I sent Boris of Smart Madness to order up some of the fuse holders. Going to pick up four of them. The rest of the wiring isn't tied to the car yet. I'm going to wait till I'm out of warranty before the DARPA experiments. But I am pre-wired for it.
Remember, if your battery or SAM go kaput related to the fire you want to put out, you can't open the tailgate. Under the seat is best. Easy reach is important.
I've seen a diesel-enhanced fire engulf a whole house in 26 seconds. Don't underestimate it.
You right guys. I will try to fabricate some nice bracket and mount it under the passenger seat. Now, I need to figure out what I will put in the tailgate to fill the spot. It is the second item I can't have in the tailgate. First one is jumper cables.....
:-)
I'll give it some more thought, but right now, I'm still in the camp where the extinguisher is to help out someone else. If my Smart catches fire, I can't believe it would ever be the "same." I'd rather get another and have fun modifying it too.

I agree and after the plastic reaches flash point, a dry chem class AB, extinguisher isn't going to put it out. The Halon might if you could flood the passanger compartment and displace all the oxygen. My guess is that even that would only be temperary and it would flash over again.
