Like everyone else... I'm glad you and the wife are OK. No matter what the cause, it is disheartening to have this happen. Keep us in the loop please regarding the repair or replacement of your Pure.

WOW. What a mishap!!, Glad that no one got hurt!
Is this the first Smart fire reported in the states of this nature? ( not caused by any outside means)?

I'm glad yall are ok (1st time using yall )

First things first, get an extinguisher when I get mine!
I'm pretty sure this might begin a recall of all smart fortwos.

I hope they replace your car, burned electrical really never will work properly ever again...

Happy Memorial Day and welcome to the Dells Rally Disappointment Club!

P.S. Hey Jeff, maybe you could bend the rules and allow people who had lost their smart to be able to attend with a different car? And maybe soon to be owners from this forum?

What's the deal on Halon extinguishers? A quick Google investigation indicates their use is legally restricted (race cars?), even totally illegal in some countries (Australia?). So, is CO2 the best type to use?

Very sorry to hear about your misfortune jimvw57.

I think the best type of fire extinguisher is powder-based. It'll stink after use but it works on electrical, liquid, and conventional fires.

Halogen's extremely expensive - I didn't know its use had become restricted.

Dry chemical extinguishers make a horrible mess, and if memory serves me, are destructive to electrical equipment. What's wrong with CO2?

I hope there's not a recall though!

I found some other stories of smart car fires...

This one's in Canada SCOOT: Car fire causes M6 delays

Here's one from across the pond BBC NEWS | England | Shropshire | Fire warning after car tow blaze they tell why it happened.

These people needed to be set straight SmartCar (drivers, SUV, unleaded, premium) - Automotive - Sports cars, sedans, coupes, SUVs, trucks, motorcycles, tickets, gasoline, drivers... - City-Data Forum

P.S. yes,
chemical extinguishers
cause horrible electrical damage, I saw a demonstration at school once. The chemical one stopped the TV power cord from burning completely up but the TV got covered in it. The sound worked but the screen was black and half the buttons didn't work. The liquid and combo extinguishers did less damage to similar TVs in the demo. VERY educational about house fires!

Note to self: don't leave oily rag in garbage can next to stove and drapes!
