C'mon!!! We all know they calculate everything and that they design obsolescence into every product and "Not" changing the oil could be just another calculation in the overall marketing/warranty/lifespan of the equation.
I am on the fence with this idea. When I had my Cessna 182 engine rebuilt I went out and firewalled the rpm with a light oil and then changed the oil. Changing the oil at an early stage does rid the engine of the these particulates but, this is a car engine. It does have a magnetic oil plug to collect these particulates. Hmmmmmm..............I am getting an extended warranty....so the hell with it.............
I'm at 6 weeks and 4,000 miles, and no need for an oil change.. Will be following the schedule. No need to fill the coffers even more at my dealer.......

After I build a motor (mainly Toyota 2f gassers lately) I want the vehicle back in 500 miles.
I can to a quick oil change ($20) and a check. On bike engines I like to section the filter and have a look. Been doing it this way for 20 years. Just like I was taught.
Oil testing on my wifes CRV a couple of years ago revealed Honda's "special additives" in the original oil to be nothing more than assembly lube.
This will be debated forever. Just like the great K&N debate.........
Does the Smart have a severe duty schedule that you should follow? Was always told that's the oil change, coolant change, etc.,that most people should follow.
Thing about diy-ing vs letting the dealer do it is that you can blame someone else for the latter if something goes wrong. That's the way I see it.
The rewarding thing for the former is really breaking out the sweat and learning something in return. Now that learning part means the possibility of making mistakes. So that if the SA says it takes 5hrs to do an oil change, you can challenge him/her by saying "BS. It's a 30min job".
I wrote earlier about having 6500 miles on the car in just under two months. I'll now add that I just got 418 miles on one tank! Something tells me that this car does NOT need that early oil change.... I'll wait till around 9500-10500 miles (I drive around 1000 miles a week).
