Flying Smart Solo

We just sold our last "grown up" car yesterday.

We had already sold our other two cars, but held on to our Accord, in case we still needed a family car.

After three months of Smart ownership, we realized we'd put only about a hundred miles or so on it, and that was just because the youngest got her license and drove it the last three weeks of school. It literally has not been out of the garage since then.

Both girls are headed off to college, one taking a Smart, the other taking a motorcycle (stomach knotted, eyes upward and mumbling silent prayers!)

We've decided to take the plunge and fly Smart-solo.

Wish us luck!

I wanna be you guys when I grow up! That's awesome!

I bought mine, and my boyfriend loves it so much that he just got on the list to get one. He was toying with the idea of getting rid of his Lexus RX 300 SUV thing... but we thought we needed some room between the two of us. Turns out we can't seem to think of what we need the room for... so he took the plunge.

Fear not, there is an Enterprise rental nearby in case there are times you need "more" car.

Happy trails!

Exactly. Even in the South, I hear "oh, I need a big pickup just in case I need to haul something like furniture." How many times do they haul something? When their buddies need to move, about twice a year. During the other 363 days of the year they're spending 3x as much on gas as they need to. And they complain every day about gas prices. No foresight.

I figured for all the times I need to haul something, the $50 or so for a rental is cheaper than one tank of gas in a pickup.

Of course, years ago my wife saw the Explorer Eddie Bauer and convinced me to get her an SUV because it was bigger and she felt safer in it. She'll ride in my smart but doesn't want one. She still thinks the SUV is safer because of its height of vision.

My Outback hasn't moved (literally) since I got my smart (6/4, but who is counting?), and yet, I'm still worried. I ski ... but I can get Yakima racks for my smart. I have a boat ... but I only need it towed into and out of the lake once a year, and the boathouse will do that for a small fee. I ... I ... I don't know, I just can't imagine having only a smart.

So, I'm weaning myself off the Outback. This weekend I'm moving it up to the lake, saving myself $1300/year in insurance (I live in Philadelphia; insurance is expensive) and another $1,000 for my space in the neighborhood parking lot. Thus, the Outback will cost me virtually nothing by Aug. 1. And if I don't use it for another 6 mos., I'll sell it; considering it's condition, I suspect I could get $10,000 and go hog wild with the cash -- or, um, pay off my smart loan.

Guess I'll have to see how the Smart does in the winter. Four wheel drive gets me out to the main road in the Winter. Guess I could use cable chains... I miss skiing, Winter or Summer!
