Orphan was out of the mix due to the trip to the dealer to get it. This was as simple as driving to the dealer and picking one out and saying, "make a deal or I'm walking". Oh, and I completely forgot I was wearing a T-Shirt that said, "It's YOUR job to make ME happy!!" The wife thinks that along with my attitude intimidated the salesman. This was the most sincere, desperate salesman I've seen in a long time - GREAT ACTOR IMO, wife thinks it was real. If you've ever watched the Simpson's, kind of like Cal? the salesman.
Thanks for all the moral support, I feel so dirty.

The Yaris was my original choice for a small commuter car (9 mile daily round trip) for days that were not suitable for the motorcycle. When they opened the Smart Center just 4 miles from home, it became a no brainer (even with a Toyota dealer 1/4 mile closer). The down side is that I am still waiting for the Smart. You made a good choice for your daughter.
. . . . been there! We went through the same two years ago with a 6' 7" son living in around a large college campus. His car has had an accident with a "sofa" (<-- you know college students moving.) Dings and dents everywhere. Nothing like a garage for safe keeping.

I want that shirt! That's the attitude I take now. Its hard when the salesman is cocky, but I don't care anymore. I'm sick of their tricks and attitude, yet another reason I like smart. I was interested in grabbing the Scion version of our Matrix (not the box) but the Yota reps didn't want that. They did everything they could so we wouldn't look at it. Thing was, they wanted our Matrix because they couldn't keep them on the lot. We didn't like the Scion and are thinking of trading it in for a new Matrix or VW Tiguan.
We got screwed on the Matrix but we needed a new car. The sales rep still talks to us and even said that he kinda screwed us, but they had a base Matrix and we needed a basic car. Most of the rip off was credit and not their fault. And he talked us out of the truck, so glad their.
Given all the points, I would have had a hard time with that choice. I don't there was a wrong choice, and Yotas are good cars.
Now when MY kid turns 15, I will evaluate their maturity and either put them on the list or get them aquanted with a mid 00's Yota... By then, that WILL be a clunker...
the five-door hatchback Yaris sold over in Europe is an interesting vehicle...much more so than the dorky 4-door we have in the US.

I think the Yaris 3dr is nice looking. It is not as nice looking as the Smart but better looking than the iQ. I had considered the Yaris till I found out about the Fortwo.

I thought the 5 door started selling here for '09. But what would I know, I have not been on a Toyota dealership lot since I quit working in the service department. Probably a good car for a young driver, small, cheap, good mpg; too bad it has that interior. Don't know why small cars can't have a simple interior anymore, they all have to be wild and crazy. Smart did a good job with this.
