I thought the 5 door started selling here for '09. But what would I know, I have not been on a Toyota dealership lot since I quit working in the service department. Probably a good car for a young driver, small, cheap, good mpg; too bad it has that interior. Don't know why small cars can't have a simple interior anymore, they all have to be wild and crazy. Smart did a good job with this.
There were no 5drs on the lot and a 4dr was out of the question - plus the 3dr was the CHEAPEST. Since she had no money to pay down and I wasn't willing to give up $, cheap was the ticket. Stopped by my uncle's shop today and it looks like a new piston, rings, and bearing will do the trick since the car was so meticulously maintained it is like new inside that motor = shouldn't pose a problem to replace just that. The Escort will make some construction worker or whatever a great economical short haul commuter.
Once she sells the car she can pay towards the other car. I've taught her enough that she should/probably will try to pay it off in a year or two if she can.
Forgot to add, kid was showing it to my wife this afternoon and when she was walking away from the car she asked how she was supposed to lock it. I told her she had everything she needed to lock it, and showed her my finger and told her that was how we used to lock our cars.
It is a bare bones car - manual roll up windows, manual locks. TONS of storage even though it is very "plasticy". She was a nightmare for the salesman "GIL", is what we'll call him. Pointed out EVERY little tiny scratch or discoloration on the car.
Once we got to see it in the daylight, it is interesting - sort of a purplish/maroon color.

Good for her - sounds like she must take after her pop!

I was thinking that silver duct tape could make a nice tridian cell on the yaris! You could do that when she's not looking!
The wife talked to her when the kid was driving her to lunch this afternoon. Said she didn't like the Smart because it attracted A LOT of attention. To the point she even got followed going into her work. I thought all that nonsense was over with and people are finally used to Smarts - I guess not. Either way, she said it creeped her out. This afternoon she said it interfered with her work yesterday because so many co-workers were asking questions about it.
Gil called again and apologized for the small scratches and said to bring the car in next week for another complete detailing/waxing/buffing to catch anything they missed.
Yaris are cute little cars. I have not yet sat in one though.
What I like about wifey's smart, and my xb is the seating position. Both cars are really easy for my 87 year old dad to get in and out of.
How is the yaris in the seating department?
Best Regards,

Actually the Yaris sits much like the Xb and even the Smart - still it has the Toyota plasticiness. One more reason to like my Smarts.
Almost everyone that looks at my Smart is impressed by the solid, high quality appearance - looking through a window or actually sitting in it. That's half the reason I got leather seats - so that I, and any gawkers, would get that higher-class impression of a small car, vs. a cheap piece of plastic. Just last night I had a security guard say how nice it looked for such a low priced car.
I notice I get more attention when it's freshly washed. Man, that black shines with a fresh coat of wax. Time to call my detailer for another half price special.
I think the Yaris 3dr is nice looking. It is not as nice looking as the Smart but better looking than the iQ. I had considered the Yaris till I found out about the Fortwo.
That's what was missing!! Toyota didn't put out an iQ for the Auto Show!
