That's because every time the smart gets hit, it ends up spinning several times very fast, spreading the force of the collision around the entire car instead of just one location. It's like hitting a spinning top. Leave it to smart to come up with such a radical new approach to collision management.

Actually I thought it was because it acts like a ping-pong ball - bouncing from everything around it - as it spins. LOL - we don't need no stinkin' crumple zones!
