fuel gauge question

i got my smart last week and dealer filled the tank. however it showed the first bar blank on the drive home. today i filled it and the tank showed the first bar blank again , i only have seven bars filled. is this normal? i love the car and my wife does not any trouble with the transmission.

Although I've never had the issue of no last bar with fill up I will say that the guage for me is quirky. There doesn't seem to be much consisntency with when a bar will drop off. I generally get the same mileage, but sometimes a bar will drop off after 30 miles and sometimes it will drop after 60.

not normal, but yes, there are one or two more recent threads on this issue with a few people noting seven bars after fillup (which in some cases jumps to all eight again a few miles down the road). Its something to keep an eye on. And don't worry- it will have nothing to do with the tranny!

My car (built in late June) will only show 7 bars also if I accept the fuel pump cutoff on the first or 2nd cutoff. In order to get 8 bars I have to fill it until the fuel cut off clicks 4 times. The first bar also takes considerably longer to dissapear than the rest of them do.

When I first got my smart, the gauge wouldn't show eight bars no matter how much gas you put in it. The dealer tried. I was told to run it down to empty or close to empty and it would reset itself. After second fill it did and I haven't had any more problems.

I had a delayed delivery because dealer noticed fuel bar was not complete after fill up. Not sure what they did to repair, but a part was ordered to make repairs

This has been discussed quite a bit over the last few days on a similar thread -
