Were you using water in your demonstration? The weight of 1 gallon of water is of course less than 1 gallon of gasoline.

No I wasn't using water, I didn't want to have to wait for the water to dry up before I put the tank back in my car and water is heavier then gasoline.

The weight of 1 gallon of water is about 8.34 pound per gallon at 60 degrees, it weights more than 1 gallon of gasoline compared to around 6.17 that's why gasoline floats on top of water.

Fortunately, salt water is also heavier than fresh water and, unlike other materials, fresh water gets even lighter as it cools toward freezing. If that didn't happen, ice would sink and start freezing from the bottom upward, until the entire body of water was frozen solid. If that uniqueness of water weren't the case, life might not exist on this planet and there would be no Smarts to drive.

Sort of.

Pure water becomes denser down to about 4°C (39°F), and after that it expands (gets less dense) by about 10% by the time it reaches 0°C (32°F - freezing). At that point it becomes stable. The change in density nearing freezing is due to the formulation of crystals.
