I think this should be a sticky. Your video is a welcome approach to all the "book knowledge" spread on this forum with references to wiki, google, my 8th grade class, etc.

I'll have to contribute some more to SCOA since you just added another very interesting smart project that I'll be watching closely.

big THANKS to you and others who do research by getting their hands dirty.
He's the smart car version of a Mythbuster....from now on, we'll call him "the smartbuster"!

Larry's THE MAN.

Yes, you may use my post/drawing if you choose. It was my deduction of how it worked and how the manual should have been written.

Good thoughts on the ECU and why some people "run out" and can only put 8.7 in and others, like myself, have put as much as 9.4 in.

Unless I'm on a twisty mountian road, I'm not nervous at the 0.0 point.

This is all really good to know for those of us (like Dave777 and myself) who are constantly 'stretching' tanks and getting 400+ (500+ for Dave) miles out of a single tank.

Yes, I'd REALLY like to know how many miles you could take the car beyond 0.0, but this depends on so many factors:
1. your speed AFTER you hit that point (which affects your mpg's)
2. the road conditions (smooth, flat, stop/start)
3. heat

... and then there's the idea of testing this numerous times to arrive at an avg or consensus.

I think I've only ever gone about 5-10 miles past 0.0 -- call me chicken.

This what M-B/smart says in their own language: “Tankvolumen/davon Reserve in l – 33/5

Tank volume/of it (or from it, or away from it) Reserve in l(iters) – 33/5

Ref.: The Bantam New College German & English Dictionary
“davon [da’fen] adv of it or them; from it or them; about it or them; away”
“Vermehren” means add (to it or them).

There really isn’t a “Reserve” per se; it is just the range of capacity that is counted down in 1/10ths instead of blocks.

I am not sure why this is still such a big deal? I mean when my car get down 2 bar left on the gas gauge I am ready to fill up. Why does it matter what the actual size is?

If you always fill up with 2 bars, it doesn't matter to you.

When I pulled out of the shopping center just west of Hoover Dam, I had no idea the next gas station was 72 miles away.

If you don't have a clue how much your tank holds and you have a choice between getting some "emergency gas" at a frightful no-name place that looks more like a shack than a place to refuel or going another 20 miles to civilization, it might be nice to go a little further for fear you'll wake up in a bathtub full of ice missing a kidney.

Just sayin'.
