Fuelly!

Just noticed that the smart has broken into the top 10 cars on Fuelly (Fuelly | Share and Compare Your MPG). If you haven't signed up yet, go for it!

I was also using Fuelly to play around with some MPG comparisons between different makes/models. Take these numbers with a grain of salt, but at least they are based on real world numbers (as reported by owners) across all conditions. The average MPG for 2008 and 2009 model years rounded to the nearest tenth (exceptions/deviations noted for each model):

Toyota Prius: 44.1 MPG
smart fortwo: 38.1 MPG
VW Jetta TDI (2009 only): 36.9 MPG
Geo Metro (all available years): 36.7 MPG
Toyota Yaris: 35.9 MPG
Scion xD: 32.6 MPG
Mini Cooper (non S, 2008 only): 32.5 MPG
Honda Fit: 32.3 MPG
Hyundai Accent (2008 only): 30.4 MPG
Honda Civic (gas only): 30.0 MPG
Toyota Corolla: 30.0 MPG
Nissan Versa: 27.7 MPG

Actually, I wish Fuelly would run these types of averages for a given make, model, year, etc. so you could see where you stand in regard to the average for your vehicle.

Nice find. I'm just a little over that right now, and am really more of an average driver. I don't generally do any of the tricks hypermilers do, but have been tracking the mileage more out of curiosity than anything. The other sites I've been on have about the same average for smart owners, so I'm not that surprised, but still neat to see.

OK, added mine. Coming up on a year's use: 44.3 mpg over that period.

Thats interesting to see. Anytime I tell some one what my milage is, because they asked, and they have told me about a car they had that did blank, I remind them I'm talking about a car they can buy now in the US.

Then they mention the VW Jetta TDI. It gets amazing milage.

Interesting to see its not all that great and Diesel and Premium arn't all that far apart on price these days.

They must be thinking of the old 06 versions

Well if I did things correctly my fuelly badge will appear below. I've only had a few fillups so far.

I was about to defend those TDI's, but I reviewed their mileages !! Only reason I would of defended them is I have an older non-turbo Jetta diesel tucked away in the garage that I haven't driven for 2 years. I may break it out this summer - it's 23 years old with nice original paint and an immaculate original interior with every maintenance record that has ever been done to it. When I drove it, I regularly and consistently got 44mpg. Like the Smart, I could never break that 50mpg barrier even though I got very close a few times.

FYI here is the icon with a link to the FE of my Mercedes B 200, not too bad for a huge bus of a car!
