Fuelly Vehicle Comparisons: Part Two

For those that saw the original Fuelly vehicle comparison thread (Fuelly!), I decided to change the parameters a bit to see if I could get a more accurate MPG reading on a few models. Same 2008/2009 criteria as before, but this time with a minimum of 10 Fuelly recorded fill-ups and a minimum sample size of 30 vehicles that meet this criteria. This would theoretically give us vehicles that are probably broken in and users that keep a better history of mileage. Here are the results:

Vehicle (#Vehicles in Sample): MPG
Toyota Prius (36): 43.7 MPG
smart fortwo (69): 38.3 MPG
VW Jetta TDI-2009 only (47): 36.9 MPG
Honda Fit (54): 33.0 MPG

By the way, the smart is currently at #8 in the vehicle list with the Fit and Golf right behind. So, we could use a few more smart Fuelly members.

Just my .02, but there's so much variation in the whole mpg measurement arena that it's hard to say what any of those figures mean. Yes, that's what people are reporting but what's their accuracy? It's been discussed on these forums as well and until somebody comes up with a way to objectively measure the mpg on enough of those cars, under controlled conditions, to get meaningful data I'm considering those numbers as anecdotal. I'm sure others will not. Or, YMMV.

True enough, it's just an exercise out of curiosity. I guess my thought isn't an absolute MPG figure for a car, since we all know it will vary greatly depending on many factors, but an average across many vehicles and driving styles to smooth out errors and aberrations like most polls do. These samples aren't large enough to really accomplish that, but it's a start and better than looking at just one or two owner's experiences. As with everything related to MPG, it should be taken with a grain of salt as YMWV (Your Mileage WILL Vary).

I just joined up... I've been keeping track of my fill-ups for over a year now. I uploaded 107 fill-ups today and will continue to keep track using Fuelly now. Looks like I've accounted for 28K of my 32K on the car, so not bad.

How do I include my Fuelly "running average icon" on my posts like you guys have done here in this forum?
