FYI: Smart with Snow Tires

As I live next to one of the winter sports capitals of the world, I thought some of you might be interested in the Smarts performance with snow tires... I had them put on by my dealer, Keeler's in Latham NY.

Yesterday we had a couple inches of snow still on the road when I left the house.... no problem coming down my driveway, in fact I did a break check at the bottom and it stopped solid.

Most of my driving was on country highways with various levels of snow removal having taken place.... my highest speed was at about 55-60 mph. Some roads were bare, some were still covered with about an inch, and others were follow-the-tire-tracks. I was very impressed with how the Smart handled with the snows tires on all road conditions.

Between all-season radials and 4WD vehicles I hadn't used snow tires in over 20 years, so my expectations were low. I was pleasantly surprised, particularly at the end of my journey pulling into my driveway, which normally requires 4WD and I had no problems climbing right up.

I will keep you all posted as the snow gets heavier this weekend, but for now it looks like snows are the way to go.

expinaki - Which tires are you running and what size? Front and Rear, right? What wheels are they mounted on?

Front and rear both, and I splurged to have them put on stock rims rather than changing them out.

Sizes are 155/60 R15 front, and 175/55 R15 rear.

Since I am new to snow tires, never having used them before, I have a question.
Since the car is rear wheel drive why do I need front snow tires as well?

Having snow tires up front helps keep the tread from loading with snow and ice, thus becoming a pair of skis. The rubber in snow tires is softer and the tread is usually siped affording better traction in conjunction with the lugged tread design.
