In referring to Webster, smidgen means "bit". At the outset I can see how you wouldn't think the word could work, however, Webster defines bit in many ways and one of them is:
4: the aggregate of items, situations, or activities appropriate to a given style, genre, or role.
I believe that a gathering of smarts is would be an aggregate of items appropriate to a style or genre!
Now I know that you probably won't care a "bit" about this, maybe not even a "smidgen".
