Both New Jersey and Oregon ban self serve gas. Even at Costco they have attendants to pump it for you. Its pretty easy, you stay in the car and ask for what you want. A guy puts the hose in your tank, pumps the gas and then removes it. Sometimes they even wash your windows and check the oil.

They even take your cash money or credit card in payment! What will they think of next?

Is this back to the '60s or what?

I drive a diesel. I pay $4.19/gal. Costs about $132.00 to fill up the tank. Better than $150.00/wk to drive ONLY to work!!!

Used to own a diesel as well . . .

car was the first year VW New Beetle TDI (not a truck). fortunately enough it typically saw between 45 and 48 MPG but as it we bought it in '98 our two boys outgrew the back seat (anyone over 5' 6" would hit their head on the back window!) so we traded it for my '06 Mazda3 5-door. I hear that diesel is running almost a $1 more than regular in some parts of the U.S.; just too bad as we'll see a lot more diesel powered cars coming but people will resist now not just because of the smell, filthy pumps, etc. but because of the fuel cost as well (although I haven't figured it out on paper in awhile as diesel typically gets 40% or better fuel mileage than the comparable gas powered car). Around Chicago we're seeing about $4.25/g for diesel but regular has past $3.50 in many places. If they ever get going on biodiesel production from switchgrass that could hopefully bring down the cost. I used B20 for a bit and it did really make a difference on the exhaust smell (very little soot smoke as well and remember, this was well before all of the bluetech/urea injection, etc. stuff).

Aside from the price of diesel per gal, I've really been happy with the diesel engine and performance. I don't get bad gas mileage either. Both of my current vehicles are diesel and if we could get the smart in diesel, that would have been my choice. My 1999 Ford F250 has 259K miles on it and runs like a "top" still with 23 Miles per gal diesel. I can't complain about that!
