Depending on the speed of your 40 mile commute, 35-39 with AC is about right. I'd say that's average for 70mph steady, or if you vary the amount of pressure on the gas pedal and/or have to brake more than a few times on the trip. Even just letting up on the gas pedal so the engine braking kicks in will impact MPGs - not because it consumes gas, but the friction's wasting kinetic energy that you just spent gas to accumulate. It's not a huge amount at the higher speeds but it'll add up to a few MPG.
Drive steady, 50 feet or more behind people, let them pass you, and you might just get 45-50 MPG doing 55mph.
