I selected a Smart over a Prius hybrid because of three main reasons:
1. cost
2. cost
3. cost
For my driving style and needs (2 seats are fine and I love driving fast Go Karts), the Prius is more expensive to purchase and MORE expensive to own over the long term.
Hybrids need their battery packs to be replaced about every 5 years, and that will cost over $2000 (at least here in Canada).
My calculations indicated that the battery replacement cost would eat up all the hybrid fuel cost savings vs the Smart over that 5 year period by a factor of roughly 50%. That is, based on my driving style/needs and fuel costs, a Prius would save me about $1300 in fuel, but then BAM, I'd need to cough up about $2500 to replace the batteries in the Prius.
So for me, the Smart was the "Smart" choice (groan).
