cherry hill, nj.... but this is not limited to them... I've gotten the same story from them, edison and white plains NY... if you want an orphan, they are going to load it up to make some money. I told all of them they can make money off of me legitimately... that I do want an extended warranty and a tire warranty... but so far, no good... the salespeople say its their boss making these calls and they have no say in... all of them have promised to keep me in mind and call if one does become avail without all the bells and whistles.

I had a call about an orphan with lots of add-ons and I declined it. I'm assuming the dealer can't add on to my original order, correct?

Correct, the agreement with Penske is to sell you the car exactly like you configured it.

well... as it looks now I just wont be getting an orphan cabrio any time soon... the salesperson at Cherry Hill NJ has just told me they had a "bunch" of orphans... and they all sold today... and all of them were loaded up with chrome, wheels, cd holders... $2500 of options that are "not negotiable"... I offered to buy one and buy an extended warranty and tire warranty... I told them they can make their money on me... I just want things that I want to get... they flat out turned me down. They said the cars are equipped - take it or leave it... so I left it... I'm really starting to hate this whole process.

The process these dealers are taking will eventually backfire on them and they will have a hard time selling the vehicles at all. They may be able to get people in the door, but once all of these 'dealer installed' items are added, the final price is simply not smart.

Learn from my mistake. Don't buy the orphans with LoJack and or Etched windows. Don't support dealers that practice these business ethics.

Smart Center Englewood in New Jersey charged the following:
Lojack Cost = $1395.00 + tax
Window Etch = $399.00 + tax

not smart.

Dodge tried this with the Dodge Omni

I remember when Dodge came out with there front wheel drive 4 cyl. econo car called the Omni in 1979 or 1980. The dealers were trying make it out like they were in short supply and charging many $$ over invoice. Not 6 months down the road the car had been recalled a few times and the luster had worn off. I actually had a dealer calling me up wanting to sell me one. These Smart dealers had better watch there business practices cause there going to have stiff competition not to far down the road.

my orphan came with LoJack. I am glad it did. nice savings on insurance, and some additional peace of mind.

YMMV.

It really depends on how you look at it. If you're one of those who gotta have the smart and does not matter what the dealer add-on to the smart then you should go ahead and buy the car. This way, you won't have to worry about the hassle of getting the aftermarket stuff or going back to the dealership to buy any additional add-ons you want. But if you are against dealer add-ons and would rather spend your time to customize your smart with aftermarket stuff then you should not get the orphan with the dealer stuff added on.
