Got Popped

A CHPpy got me for my window tint. I'm not sure what percentage my side window tint is, but it's just over the limit. I think he stopped me because of the angle he was viewing me from and the fact that the sun was low in the sky reflecting off the window.
I guess it's back to my tint shop to do a lighter shade. One thing the CHP officer said was I just need to remove the roll down window tint. the rear quarter can stay the same. I'm not sure how the two different shades will look next to each other, though. The limo tint rear stays.

Go to the station and let them check it. I did this with mine and they threw my ticket out.

This is what you do, picture this, light on the top dark on the bottom and you start the dark tint (lets say the driver side window) in the front bottom and go up to the back top at a angle. I have seen it done and it looks cool and you can get away with that cause the dark is past your head..

When I got mine tinted I could've legally gotten a darker tint on the rearward three windows, but opted to get all of them the same. I just thought it would look better. Still, I wish I could've legally gone darker all the way around for privacy's sake. I forget exactly what the tint is, but man it sure blocks the IR. You can feel the heat instantly when you roll a window down a bit and sunlight hits you. It's really surprising to me how well it does this since the tint really isn't all that dark.

"Get away with" is subjective. It's up to the cop, his tint meter and state law to decide what you get away with. The tint shop is in business to make money, not keep you legal. If it looks too dark, it likely is.

This varies from shop to shop and state to state. In Indiana, the shops will evidently get busted for selling and installing tint that is beyond the limits. The shop I use (haven't tinted my smart and don't intend to) was VERY adamant about NOT allowing me to choose anything over the limit.

Having said that, my all black Subaru has all (legally) blacked out windows. It sometime sucks at night. Occasionally I have to roll down the side windows to check for traffic under certain visibility conditions.

So the officer actually had a "tint meter"? Gave you a ticket?

Knock on wood, I've used 20% ALL THE WAY AROUND (except windshield of course) and have never gotten pulled over for tint. One time an Indiana State Trooper pulled me over for speeding (at night) and gave me a warning for the speeding and didn't say one word about my tinted windows.

Just had my smart done with all 5 pcs of glass at 20%. I've used this guy since the mid-90's.........he's GREAT!

And I agree with 'Docthrock'....did the CHIP actually HAVE a 'tint-meter'? If not, you might be able to get it thrown out. Do you have the receipt from your installation showing you're "legal"? Take that with you too.

Good Luck!

You know in Las Vegas you could paint your windows black and they don't seem to care...

Dealer did mine. I said dark as legal, they said if I get a ticket, they would fix everything.
