All that needs to be done is wire the positive & negative wires directly to the battery. Then the siren can be placed next to the coolant tank under the front hood. All of the wires including the motion and shock sensor can be placed in the drivers footwell. And the wires goto the battery.
I was recommended to get this product after a fellow owner in Canada recommended this.
Note: I stopped by my dealer today and they confirmed everything said here (i.e. alarm cannot be added in the States, panels are mucho dinero if bought seperately).
They also said that if you install an aftermarket alarm, it might void the car's warranty! (Or, at the very least, mean that if any part of your car's electrical system screws up they won't have to fix it for free.) Not sure if this is true or not, but you might want to read that fine print on your bill of sale (or talk to the dealer you bought it from) before you put in an alarm.
Worse comes to worst. My electrical system gets goofed by something directly connected to the battery. I disconnect the alarm I have, take everything out of the car (30 mins) and then say..."hey my electrical system isn't working!"

I purchased an alarm from my dealer, and they setup an install from the alarm company (KARR) at my house. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't sell me this if it voided the warranty.
I will have to let you know tomorrow. I work for Ford. The guy I had install it worked for Technicar which is a huge electronics installer here in Florida. This is the alarm they recomended for me. I will let you now though. took us about 5 hours to install since there was no color codes out for the smart when we installed it. We had to track down every wire.

FWIW, if you are in the early stages and thinking about adding the alarm system to your smart order, it will be worth the cost. When I was talking to our insurance agent, that is one thing that the insurance companies look for on a smart. If you do have it, your premium will be lower than if you do not. I have not checked with our dealer yet, but will later on.
