The salesman at my dealership made it clear to me that any "aftermarket" installations would void the manufacturer's warranty. Although if I remember correctly, there is a federal consumers-rights law against such claims. Being so small and lightweight, in many situations an alarm would be more valuable than the "Lojack" feature, which in most cases will never be needed.
I'd prefer to have a deterrent for those curious individuals who may take the liberty to rock the car, or break-into it to steal something. This potential is far more likely to occur, as opposed to it being stolen altogether. Car thieves normally choose vehicles that they know can accelerate quickly enough to hide before being detected, leaving the 'Smart' an unpopular candidate. If anyone has had an alarm system installed by their 'Smart' dealer, please let me know as I intend on researching this topic further.

A Businessperson's Guide to Federal Warranty Law

The only way the warranty could be void would be on the parts that were modified or directly affected by the install.

That being said, there are too many horror stories about botched alarm installs to go with the aftermarket... and thinking you can just remove it and take it in for warranty repairs when it gets screwed up is rubbish - one look at a modified wiring harness, and your claim just flew out the window.

The alarm on the smart uses a separate siren for the alarm, instead of the horn. The chirps are 3 medium volume electronic beeps on lock, and 1 each time you press unlock or pop the hatch... it's seriously not that loud.

I am a police officer and swear by Lojack. I got it installed in our smart for $336 out the door. Alarms can easily be bypassed, but at least with lojack you will get your car back.
