My "Charlie" earned his nickname because for the past year, every time my wife saw a photo of a smart she declared it a "tuna can" and told me to have fun, she probably wouldn't get near it. When I got the "OTW" call we went over to our assigned smartcenter and she actually sat in one. I could hear the gears starting to turn.
Once "Charlie" arrived and she went for her first top-down ride, the gears really started spinning. Lots of "I can't believe how comfortable it is." and "It's much bigger on the inside than I expected."
To make a long story short, last night she sat down and reserved her very own red/black passion. She understands the order and wait process, so no problem there. In about a year, we'll be the "smartest" family on the block.
I told my hubby I was reserving one last March. Either he did not believe me or he did not hear me. Around January, I reminded him that it was coming. This time, he did not believe me. BUT, he started talking about how unsafe a small car was and he did not want me to die. Or, as he really put it, he did not want to be wiping my hind end for the rest of my life. When it was on the boat over, he started saying: "You are not really gonna buy that thing are you?" I said, yes I am. "WHere are you getting the money?" he said, I said I had saved it. "Do you have enough saved up to buy me an antique pickup truck?" Well, yeah...I guess I do. SO that is how we ended up with the big yellow monster and the tiny blue baby in the garage. He would not ride in it for three weeks. He hates the ride, but loves the seats. I would say that he has "accepted" my purchase, but we will never be fighting over it.

My husband feels just about the same way, but can't really do anything about it. That's what I've decided to get, so that's what I'm getting. We'll see if he comes around once I get it. I'm the one who's working, so it's really my choice.
I got static when I did the reservation late at night on Day One the site opened. (Not that I was waiting, a friend reserved one and announced it to an email list.)
I got static when I told her I configured it whenever last year
I got static when I told her I got the call saying it was here in a "couple of weeks" in January.
I did NOT get static when they told me it arrived. I figured, at worst, I could flip it. So I went over and got it.
I started hearing on about day two: "when are you putting an ad on Craigslist". Like we're going to eat mac & cheese now that I "spent" $20K. (I had sold a car for $20K 3 months earlier, and had almost bought any of 3 or 4 Porsche convertibles ranging in price from $25K to $70K in the interim.......)
So the bottom line now is that she's indifferent. Rides in it once in awhile. Never inquired about driving it. But she did quite enjoy our little meet and greet, and meeting the other enthusiastic owners!
Nope, she thought it was a great idea b/c it fits in the driveway with the Explorer and Z4. Also, she can drive the Explorer to the airport without me having to drive her baby all week (which incidentally isn't allowed to park at the airport).
The over $40 savings in gas each week is also liked by her and the fact that the lifespan on the other two cars just got increased b/c they'll get less wear. We got a Passion with only the fog lights added so it was pretty inexpensive comparatively. Its also less "boring" than a Yaris an more acceptable than a Kia which were my other commuter options.

I'm ashamed to admit that nearing the delivery date I was the speed bump if anything It wasn't that I didn't want the Smart, but that I liked the MCS we had and was not too happy with the warranty with or how the (lack of) delivery info was going and (lack of) response we were getting and unknown potential add on dealer fee nonsense with no option to chose our dealer.
And to be honest, initially, before my test drive, I was concerned about 71 horsepower and all the rumors/bad feedback I was hearing about the tranny.
Tell you what though, I adore the car, very glad we got it

Msjohnson, your wife's smartie is not allowed to park at the airport?? Not safe enough, too much weather exposure??? Geez, they really do become part of the family;)
