Has Your Smart Car Caused a Crash?

I was second in line at a stop light yesterday. There were two cars in the lane to the left of me.
The light turned green. The guy in front of me took off. I took off.
The first car in the left lane hesitated a fraction of a second. The guy right behind him took off and smashed right into the rear end of that brand new BMW, right beside me! Will our insurance rates go up because Smarts are accident-prone?!!!

I'm afraid mine did at an intersection. I was waiting on a truck to pass through the intersection (my left to right) so I could turn right and get behind him when a lady in a car on the opposite side of the intersection was looking at me and was coming across the intersection towards me and pulled right in front of the truck I was waiting on which struck her on her passenger side. Luckily she was not hurt, just shaken up. The driver of the truck was also unhurt but his air bag deployed and probably saved him from more serious injury.

Well.. I can't say the same about me.. as I drive a New Beetle.. but for those of you who do have Fortwos.. the car is really a neckturner when people see them. I know about break my neck watching Fortwos as they occasionally pass me on the road.

Yes, just like the Mini Cooper, the Smart will "cause" a crash for those it distracts. It's not the car's fault, nor yours. I witnessed one in front of me as I was trying to turn out of a McD's. Driver's friend said, "hey look" and the driver looked. Driver in front stopped for a car that stalled while they too were staring. Whamo, fender bender. I got out of there before I became a target of blame. Let the other 15 witnesses tell the story.

There's a 10% chance that the motorcycle was checking out my car in his mirror in severely crowded rush hour traffic when bump-whop-whop-thump-scrape-skid happened. There was nothing I could do for him (no CPR or similar training) and I was in the other lane very clear of the accident zone so I kept going to make room for those who could help. I didn't see what caused the bump, just the aftermath. He wasn't moving in the second or two after the skid that I saw him; I hope he ended up okay.

Bikers like the Smart more than most drivers out there!

I caused an accident last month when a motorist stopped to look at my car and was hit by another who had done the same but had not stopped. It was a moderate fender-bender with no injuries. As a volunteer fireman, I was first on the scene!

As a Law Enforcement Officer, I would suggest that you NOT state "I caused an accident" since clearly YOU did no such thing. Inattention on the part of others caused the accident. If you want to accept blame then fine, but do not complain when you receive your summons for an accident you caused. And then some of you admitted to leaving the scene of an accident that you claimed to cause... Can you say misdemeanor
