Where is Jerryville,VA (maps.google.com could not find it)? I drive through some hills everyday from Leesburg, VA to Rockville, MD and it does alright. There is an article floating around on the best way to use the transmission of the smart. The gentleman in the article gets around 50 MPG. I average closer to 40 MPG and I am not complaining...
I don't know if San Francisco qualifies as a mountainous area but include Mt. Tam which is a little under 3000 feet and you get my impressions of the smart. It's fine. It goes up hills well, the transmission is well orchestrated for the task. The mileage however, will be trash. Nothing kills good mpgs like a hill. Expect 20-25 if you do a lot of hills.
I live at 6,000 ft and go down to 3,500 ft a few times a week and to 2,000 ft at least once a month. I drop 1,000 ft just going to the grocery store, but I'm still averaging close to 40 mpg.
I am about as hilly/mountain as it gets in the east. Mine does great. I do use manual mode and down shift for hills but only as needed and still get 40-45 mpg. I almost feel the car is more of a touring car than a city car....but that's just me!
