The wife and I visited Austria about 3 years ago and we were both equally amazed to see these little smart cars all over the place! We both fell in love with them. I attempted to smuggle one back to the states in my back pocket, but the Tridion cell set off the metal detectors at the airport!!!
So, the minute we heard about the $99 reserve program, we were on it! We still can't believe that we actually own one of these things right here in the USA!
I saw my first smart in the movie "A Good Year" with Russell Crowe - he drove a yellow 450 rental during the movie.
Later, my home page had a banner ad from smartcenter sarasota (FL) and I just followed the links to smartusa.com and fell in love~!
I plunked down my $99 and three months later picked up "Orphan Annie" - my red/black/red coupe.
My DDE on the original reservation is Jan - Mar. 09 and I plan to follow thru and purchase it - a blue/silver/beige couple, with most of the bell & whistles.
I was leaving work one day and while waiting at a stop a smart went past and I followed it to see what it was and found the dealer on the license plate. Then found one at a business 1/2 mile down the road and talked to the owner. A few weeks later we drove to the dealer to test drive and 3 days later I had my smart!! Happened very quickly and I love my car. Only problem so far has been a flat tire that I repaired(?) with the emergency kit. All is good!

Various films, mostly The Da Vinci Code. Then as I fell in love with the car (shhh, dont tell the wife) I saw it on various Wii commercials. Makes sense. I love hamsters, rabbits, chinchillas, small gadgets and now the smart!
I read that Zap World was going to bring them into the US but after they adapted them for the American roads. I saw the price of $24,000 (twice that of the European one). I read that some one else was going to import them to the USA from the Minutia magazine. When I read that one could reserve one, I did. I reserved one in June or July of 2007 and received it in March of 2008. I really like small cars and this is why I ordered one. The low price of the Pure was a big selling point. I really like small things and things that are different. The Smart Fortwo is both.
Back when Speed/Speed Channel was still called Speedvision, there was a european show titled Motorvision. The Smart Fortwo was highlighted, I called in my girlfriend to come and watch with me, and we both fell in love with the car. She is now my wife, so the decision to reserve a Fortwo was an easy one.
I found out about them through web surfing alternative vehicle sites - electric, hydrogen, the odd water or compressed air, etc. Seemed the only reasonable package at the time, and test drove it on the national tour.
