If the temp dosnt change, and I have the auto A/C, and I don't hear the condenser kick on, then how do I know that the A/C is on?
Your gas level will tell you quick enough. The MPG drop is pretty significant, easily 10 to 15%.
Keep in mind too that if it's under about 35°F outside, your AC won't click on in any case, since the compressor doesn't like the cold. If you're in a colder state, then you may not have the compressor running right now because of that. But when it get up into the 40's again, it will kick back on if it's still in the full-up position, and your gas will vanish much quicker.
Texas my friend. I tested this theory. I ran the A/C and could hear the condenser kick on. I then shut it off, waited a few minuets, then used defrost. I couldn't hear the AC kick on.
That and an '09. Sounds like the '09 has lost this "feature" that the '08 has. I can hope a re-program disables this? Anyone have an upgraded '08 that can confirm this? If it is, one more reason for me to ask about it!
I checked my 09 on the way home tonight and it works "almost" like John H described. In the 12 o'clock position (defrost) the A/C WILL come on BUT, only when I put it in FAN position 2 or higher
When I put it back to FAN position 1 the A/C cuts out, the A/C also cuts out when I go to either side of the 12 o'clock position. I could "hear" the A/C click in and out and also verified via my tach and scangauge. I have the "comfort package"
For defrost, my A/C does not kick on. I have felt the air, and its just as warm as when I have it on anything else. And as long as the car is pulling air from the outside, the moisture level with balance with the the air outside and there will be no fog. For a quick defrost, use the A/C.
I can hear the compressor kick on when I have it on full defrost, it doesn't kick on when its one click right or left. You may not feel the air temp change since the system is supposed to put out air at a temperature to achieve the setting on the temperature selector. Listen for the clunk of the compressor turning on and off.
I'm finding that when the dew point is near the air temp and its raining that I have to run defrost with A/C to clear the windshield regardless of the temperature selection.

Yea, some times I have to do the same, but if you have to turn the AC on then it is not on otherwise.
I tried it again today and even at full blast, my AC does not come on with defrost only.
