Temperature control is like an on/off switch

I love my smart, but one minor annoyance is that when running the heater, I have a choice of no heat or full heat, and nothing in between. The temperature control has about 10 detents between coldest and warmest, but the middle 8 don't seem any different from the warmest setting.

Something strange there. Mine puts out graded amounts of heat throughout the temperature control range. The control also works to vary the a/c throughout its range.

Mine also puts out in "graduated" amounts of heat. Don't know about the A/C since I've only had her a week and the temp it 8 degrees

Mine was 'kinda the same way, and then I realized that you have to "set it and forget it".... sorta'. Since it's automatic, if you keep adjusting the setting, it can't figure out what to do. If you set it and leave it, it'll maintain the set temperature.... more or less. However, it's NOT going to have hot air blowing out except pretty much on the highest setting. e.g. If you set it at 75, it'll blow "warm" air until it reaches 75, but the air won't be "hot" coming out of the vents like other cars... unless you push the slider to MAX! At least, that's the way mine works, and I even had a new module put in last September because I didn't think it was working right. Now I set it right at 70 and leave it there, and it works fine. It still DOESN'T blow HOT air, though! :>)

I'll second that. In the morning, I use one notch up from the bottom and it seems to get too warm and I then want to turn it back down to the bottom, which is too cold (no heat). If I leave it alone, though, it will taper the heat off by itself after it reaches a certain temperature. So, I now just leave it one notch up and don't futz with it.

I think the climate control IR eye is tuned to be less sensitive so it's not constantly chasing itself from too hot to too cold and vice versa.

That's exactly what I think, and once you get used to how it works, (typically) you really like it. I know when I drive my wife's Aveo now, I HATE the heater control because there's no "happy medium!" It's either too hot..... or too cold. ONE click makes far too much change in the temp! :>(

Once it warms up, it puts out some really good heat. I've had to play with the fan controls to vary the heat output though. Your feet tend to get cold if you direct too much heat up high. I either split it between defrost/vents, defrost/floor, or floor/vents depending how cold it is and whether I need to keep up with fogging up of the windows. The heated seats keep you toasty until things start to warm up. You can feel them even with a heavy parka on. I haven't had any defrosting issues at all though. The car clears up fairly quick. I use strictly winter only windshield washer fluid with de-icer which speeds up the de-icing/defrosting process in the morning.
The winter washer-fluid will also keep the line to the rear sprayer from freezing and making it useless. Ask me how I know it's a 5-hour (book-time) job to fix that...

My commute is about 5 minutes on a normal day. I hate that I am driving it right now, but taking the train is not an option (the stop in front ofm y apartment is the stop I would get off at for work), and carrying a bag, laptop bag, whatever else I usually have - and walking just becomes impossible.

I don't use the heat in the morning - just the heated seats. It's putting out a little warmth by the time I get to work, but I'd rather let the engine have the heat in an attempt to get up to operating temperature. I make it a point to get it good and hot on the highway a few times a week though to compensate.

My garage here stays about 60* in the winter, and my garage at work is sadly about the same temp as the air outside (just dry and protected). Mornings are no issue - I freeze my way home in the evenings.

3/4 of the windshield gets defrosted but my side windows get totally frosted over. It doesn't matter how much I scrape, they will frost over after about 10 minutes of so.

So anyone here have the same issue? I'm not sure if I need to keep the vent on inside air or outside anymore. Then I'm not sure if I should turn on the Air Conditioning to take advantage of the dehumidifier in it. I pretty much tried everything but nothing seems to get it to work well.

Called my dealer and he said it could be blocked air filters. I doubt that because it really blows but just doesn't get as hot as it should.
It sounds you are experiencing one of the caveats of a diesel... such an effecient transfer of energy that it is not throwing off tons of unneeded excess heat.

Are you sure the heater booster is actually working? Are the windows frosting inside or out?
