If it was on its side, driver still in the seat and complaining of pain, my guess is for max safety the crew cut the car to gently extract the driver through the roof area, instead of yanking them out the door, upwards. That only happens in movies. Plus, the crew's going to go to the tools they know they can trust -- they MIGHT be able to pry the roof off with 20 mins of effort, or they could just cut through in half the time.
